NOx Sensor Diagnostics

NOx sensors measure the nitrogen oxide levels in the exhaust before and after the SCR catalyst. When one fails or reads out of range, it commonly triggers an AdBlue warning and countdown — even when the AdBlue system itself is fine.

Can a NOx sensor cause an AdBlue warning?

Yes. The ECU uses NOx sensor readings to decide whether the SCR system is working. A sensor that fails or drifts can make a healthy system look faulty, and the ECU responds with an AdBlue or emissions warning.

Why we test before replacing

NOx sensors are expensive, and a NOx sensor code does not always mean the sensor is at fault. Wiring faults, exhaust leaks, dosing problems or poor fluid can all produce similar readings. We compare live data from both sensors and check the circuits before recommending a replacement.

  • Upstream and downstream sensor live data comparison
  • Sensor heater and communication circuit checks
  • Exhaust leak inspection near sensor positions
  • Confirmation of correct AdBlue dosing
