What “engine will not restart in X miles” means
Euro 6 diesels are required to stop the driver ignoring an emissions fault. When the SCR system detects a problem — low fluid, poor fluid quality, a failed sensor or a dosing problem — the ECU starts a countdown. The mileage depends on the manufacturer and the type of fault.
The countdown does not stop on its own. Turning the engine off and on, or refilling the tank, will not cancel it if a real fault is present.
Already locked out?
A vehicle in no-start lockout can usually still be recovered. We find and fix the fault, refill and prime the system if needed, then clear the inducement so the engine will start and drive normally again. If the vehicle cannot be driven to us, ask about our mobile service.
Common causes of an AdBlue countdown
- AdBlue level sensor reporting empty after a refill
- Tank heater failure, often noticed in winter
- AdBlue pump not building pressure
- Blocked or crystallised dosing injector
- NOx sensor reporting poor SCR efficiency
- Contaminated or diluted AdBlue
Act early
The sooner a countdown is looked at, the more options you have. Call us as soon as the message appears and we'll tell you how urgent it is for your vehicle.
